WASHINGTONMarch 25, 2016PRLog — The Marshfield and South Shore Chambers of Commerce recently presented the U.S. Chamber of Commerce with a framed land deed signed by then Secretary of State Daniel Webster, whose home was located on the current site of the headquarters of the U.S. Chamber.

The historic document is unusual since it is signed by Daniel Webster, his son Edward and his second wife Caroline LeRoy Webster. Webster was a minor land speculator with holdings in the Midwest. The deed is dated at the time that Webster was serving as Secretary of State under President John Tyler and living on the site now occupied by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which has a room named in his honor. The former Webster home and now the current U.S. Chamber of Commerce is located across the north front of the White House, on the side of Lafayette Park. It is possible that Webster sold the land near Fort Wayne, Indiana to help pay for his expenses as Secretary of State.

Webster represented Massachusetts as both a Congressman and Senator. He lived and practiced law in the town of Marshfield, MA.

The deed was presented to Tom Donohue, President of the U.S. Chamber on Wednesday, March 16th by Peter Forman President and CEO of the South Shore Chamber of Commerce and Marshfield Chamber President Jonathan Grabowski.

“We are honored to share this historic document with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce,” said Forman. “The Daniel Webster land deed will now have a home where the Webster family lived while serving our country.”
